I spent the majority of today working on the Girlfriendology newsletter*. It has (thankfully!) grown in readership and is fun to create. In preparation I skipped around a few blogs and sites this morning and discovered that it was International Women's Day. Okay, first, I don't catch the news much with my hectic schedule, but I was upset that I didn't know about this in advance. How could this day come, and potentially go, without some recognition? (And I'm all about Girlfriendship and supporting women - which is right in there with International Women's Day!)
International Women's Day is celebrated as a national holiday in Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Several events went on in the U.S. today - but not nearly enough!
In reading up on International Women's Day (and they have several great videos about women around the world on their website), we have much to be thankful for the women who went before us and earned our freedom and rights. And, we also have lots of responsibility to be aware of, and involved in, the rights and freedom of women around the world.
How can we be a 'girlfriend' to women of the world? I'd love to have those answers but I do believe it lies not only in the big things (like legislation changes, international awareness and involvement in making change) but also in the little things like being a girlfriend - and spreading positive energy one friendship at at time.
I'd love your thoughts. Thanks Girlfriends!
